Continuous flow reactor technology can make product most efficiently - cheaper, better quality and at reduced energy and environmental cost through more efficient mass and heat transfer.
CFM also enables a simplified and faster approach to bulk production by scaling out as opposed to scaling up. CFM can potentially impact overall footprint of manufacturing space and reduce the cost of manufacturing (lower clean-room/sterile space costs).
To successfully sustain CFM it is absolutely necessary to have GMP i.e., good manufacturing practices deployed with tight control and feedback loops. Closed loop systems with minimal delays are imperative.
Temperature and flow of reactants and product are relatively simple measurements and easy to monitor and control in processing.
Being able to measure pH accurately, rapidly and monitor continuously is often the difficult task. This is caused by intrinsic issues that relate to fundamentals of the measuring principles. Glass probes suffer from poor response time and also suffer from the need for frequent calibration! How would one be able to loop such a system for CFM?
